Japanese Bride Solemn mystery surrounds this obscure Tea Lautrec print from 1978. An anxious bride clutches the verdant rail of an outdoor temple. It is midnight, and no one else is around. The stone gray city in the distance discreetly suggests familial disapproval of the marriage. The Bride’s innocence is suggested by her efflorescent uchikake, the ceremonial bridal coat worn over kimonos. The flowers have not quite fully bloomed, and the fruit tenaciously hangs to its branches. Delicate golden tassels dangle from wide lipped sleeves and shoulders. Her white painted face stands out like a full moon against the darkest of nights. She smiles, and her pinpoint gaze suggests that she sees her fiancé approaching. Perhaps he is riding a horse, coming to steal her away in the night. We may never know. It is a well known fact that in the early 1900’s, Toulouse Lautrec had a keen fascination with Japanese art and culture. This print is either a reprint of one of Lautrec’s earlier lithographs, or the work is directly derivative from Lautrec’s Japanese themed art. Whatever the case, this poster is mint condition. It measures 11” X 15”. |
